PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL WELLBEING IN THE WESTERN ISLES

NHS Western Isles has announced its commitment to give, effective psychological and social wellbeing help, to people living in the Western Isles. Services will offer support for anxiety, depression, long term health worries, loneliness or sleep difficulties.

NHS Western Isles, supported by the mPower team will be connecting and supporting people to use digital access to online services, which are helping many people across Scotland already.

Most of the services are based on the principle that difficulties, can be helped by considering how thoughts, feelings and behaviours are interlinked and can be gradually changed

HOUSEHOLD WASTE ONLINE BOOKING SYSTEM FOR RESTRICTED VEHICLES

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, have now introduced a booking system for householders looking to dispose of bulky household waste items, at the Household Waste Recycling Centres

A restricted vehicle, such as a trailer, pickup, or van, will not be permitted entry ,without a valid booking confirmation. The new booking system is online, and must be made a minimum of 24 Hours, in advance of a trip to the site.
Time slots are available at 15-minute intervals throughout each day the sites are open, up until 30 mins before closing time for each site.

Household waste bookings can be made for Creed Park (Stornoway) and Rueval (Benbecula) via the Comhairle’s Booking System for Restricted Vehicles, page. If a member of the public is unable to make a booking online, they can ring Customer Services on 01851 600 502 and a member of staff will generate a booking on their behalf.

 

ADVICE FOR PATIENTS AND CARERS: HOSPITAL HEALTHCARE APPOINTMENTS

NHS Western Isles would like to remind patients and their carers that Infection Prevention and Control restrictions, remain in place at each of its hospital sites, with patients being requested to enter hospital buildings unaccompanied, unless absolutely necessary.

Carers and family are welcome to walk patients to main entrances but, unless critical to patient care, they will then be requested to return to their vehicle to wait for the patient to exit the building.

Anyone attending healthcare appointments must ensure they follow social distancing guidance and adhere to strict hygiene to reduce the risk of infection.

 

THE MASS STRANDING OF WHALES IN LOCH BOISDALE

A number of volunteers and boat operators, attended a mass stranding of long finned Pilot whales in Loch Boisdale, over the weekend.
South Uist residents undertook a rescue mission to save the mammals with direction from British Divers Marine Life Rescue personel .
Local volunteers and boats from Uist Sea Tours and Mowi salmon farm, herded the group of whales out through a narrow channel before the tide dropped too far. Volunteers were supported by special rescue pontoons from Ullapool, Stornoway and Skye.
British Divers Marine Life Rescue thanked the local rescuers, highlighting “their actions on the first day -despite having no training and only advice over the phone from our hotline coordinator, they saved the lives of 10 out of 17 animals, and this was repeated again on Saturday.

 

ARTISTS COMMISSION

The Arts Centre An Lanntair, is offering an artist’s commission to decorate the Round Room area, as they look towards reopening, when government COVID-19 restrictions allow
The Round Room area of An Lanntair is an informal space used by many different people throughout the day and night.

The commission is for an artist to radically transform this space using a design which will envelop the room as one piece of art.
